I'm Bennett Blackwood. This beach is getting a refill! At Pennsylvania's Presque Isle State Park, crews are bringing in sand to replace what Lake Erie carries away. Work began on September fourteenth. Three million dollars in federal and state funding supports beach nourishment and sand stockpiling through the fall and into next spring. The first task calls for about thirty thousand cubic yards of sand at four beaches and along Mill Road. You're watching the actual September work: trucks deliver the sand, and bulldozers spread it into place. Marty Crosson, from the Army Corps of Engineers, explains why this matters. The park gets a great deal of recreational use and it minimizes erosion to keep placing sand. The work helps care for a place people and wildlife share. If you'd like to help the park, Presque Isle Partnership offers volunteer opportunities and general park donations. Those links are in our article, alongside the original project report.
