Nine birds. A second chance.

A tiny bird with a very
big comeback, the Sihek also called
the Guam kingfisher, disappeared from the
wild in the 1980s. Dedicated breeding
programs kept the species alive. Then
nine birds got a new chance
on Palmyra Atoll in 2024. A
Fish and Wildlife Service update published
in January 2026 reported that all
nine had survived beyond their first
year in the wild. The photographs
here show a Sihek in care
and the real island refuge. They
are archive images, not footage of
the release. Palmyra is a stepping
stone. The long-term hope is
to return these birds to Guam
when the threat from invasive snakes
can be controlled. Nine small birds,
years of teamwork, and a future
worth protecting.
