A bicycle part can help someone take their next step. I'm Bennett Blackwood. In Michigan, prosthetist and former bicycle mechanic Ben Hogan is bringing those two worlds together through Project Bike Leg. The project shares designs that use bicycle components and locally available materials to build prosthetic legs. The idea is to make the design accessible to trained people working where conventional prosthetic care is hard to reach. This is not a do-it-yourself fitting recommendation. A prosthesis needs skilled, individual care. What makes this story hopeful is the sharing: designs that other makers and professionals can study, improve, and adapt. Michigan State engineering students have also worked on the challenge with Hogan and MSU Bikes. These are project photographs and archived walking footage, not a new clinical trial.
