A blood sample Chad Rockow forgot about for thirteen years gave four members of his family an early warning they never knew they needed. I'm Bennett Blackwood. In 2012, a farm accident shattered Chad’s leg and sent him to Mayo Clinic. During his recovery, he joined the Mayo Clinic Biobank and donated a blood sample. Years later, genetic sequencing found a mutation in the SDHD gene, linked to a rare inherited tumor syndrome. Testing confirmed that Chad’s father, brother and sister carried it too. Scans found tumors in several family members. Chad and his brother had surgery, while the whole family entered ongoing medical surveillance. [Chad Rockow, original interview audio:] Not only did they save my life, but it’s going to save my sister’s life, my brother’s life, and my dad’s. Mayo says its Biobank now includes more than fifty-two thousand participants. Chad’s case shows what one donated sample can mean years later: an early warning that reached an entire family.
