After 100 days, Maricela danced out — transcript

April–August 2026 · Arizona

After more than one hundred days in the hospital, Maricela Olivas walked—and danced—through a hallway of cheering caregivers. I'm Bennett Blackwood. The New Mexico mother had lived with worsening liver disease for five years and developed severe breathing problems from hepatopulmonary syndrome. Another transplant center had turned her away because of the complexity. At Mayo Clinic, liver, heart, lung and critical-care teams planned the operation together. Maricela received a liver transplant in April 2026, with E.C.M.O. supporting her heart and lungs during the most dangerous stretch. She left the hospital in early August. [Maricela Olivas, original interview audio:] At the end of the line, I was jumping like crazy. I don’t know how I got the energy to jump—I was happy. Maricela called the transplant a new door opening for her life and her family. Her recovery also reflects the gift behind every transplant. The official Donate Life registry link is included with the story for anyone who wants to register as an organ donor. Good stories every day. Follow Carpe Diem News. Seize the day. Share the good.
